Premium Synthetic Motor Oil FAQs

Royal Purple high performance synthetic motor oil contains Synerlec®, which is our proprietary additive technology. Synerlec produces a significantly greater film strength than provided by any other brand of lubricants, which means that it provides the greatest protection against metal-to-metal contact.

Royal Purple’s API-licensed* engine oils carry the current American Petroleum Institute (API) engine oil licenses and meet or exceed the current International Lubricant Standardization and Approval Committee (ILSAC) engine oil specifications. The Royal Purple Euro-spec engine oil formulations (SAE 0W-40 and SAE 5W-40) also meet Association des Constructeurs Européens d’Automobiles (ACEA)A3/B3 performance requirements for passenger car and light truck gasoline and diesel engine oils. Meeting these industry specifications is typically the minimum requirement for compliance with new vehicles.

Over the last several years, the API and ILSAC specifications have become increasingly restrictive on certain engine oil additives, particularly those commonly used for anti-wear. As such, the new warranty restrictions aren’t the best solution for consumers who have modified vehicles or those simply looking for the greatest performance.

Our HPS (High Performance Street) motor oils are formulated with these consumers in mind and include a dramatically enhanced anti-wear package. HPS is the choice for those seeking to maximize horsepower and torque, while reducing wear, heat and fuel consumption. HPS is the most robust street engine oil available.

No. Testing has shown no short- or long-term adverse affects on catalysts in mechanically sound vehicles.

The HPS series engine oils from viscosity 5W-20 through 20W-50 are all formulated for use in gas and diesel engines. As such, Royal Purple HPS oils are ideal for those with modified diesels and those simply looking for more performance out of their diesel. To ensure good performance, select the viscosity grade that is specified for your engine. For assistance in selecting the best oil for your application, please contact the Royal Purple Automotive Technical Department.

Yes. Royal Purple lubricants are fully compatible with mineral or synthetic oils. No special procedures are necessary when switching to Royal Purple.

However we do recommend doing a complete drain and fill as opposed to doing a partial top off on top of some other companies oil. We recommend against mixing different product lines or brands of oils from different companies, as it is not considered a best practice. Additive conflicts can occur in some cases when dealing with large quantities of mixed dissimilar engine oils.

Yes. Royal Purple currently offers many viscosity grades of API-licensed, warranty compliant motor oils. To allow for proper break-in of the engine, Royal Purple recommends waiting until the manufacturer’s first scheduled oil change or a minimum of 2,000 miles in new gasoline engines. Allow 6,000 to 8,000 miles before using Royal Purple in diesel engines.

In engine service the oil typically loses its purple color shortly after being put into service. This is due to the extreme temperature swings and combustion by-products that engine oil is exposed to. Also, residual used oil left in the engine at the oil change will affect the new oil appearance, as well. The color will turn brown at some point.

Please contact our Automotive technical department with the make, model and year of your vehicle.

Yes. All Royal Purple engine oils contain the zinc/phosphorus anti-wear compound zinc dialkyl dithiophosphate (ZDDP). Royal Purple HMX, HPS and XPR high performance synthetic engine oils are formulated with a higher concentration of anti-wear additive as well as a healthy dose of our proprietary Synerlec® additive technology and are suitable for both roller and flat tappet valve trains.

Yes. For factory stock, non-performance flat-tappet camshaft equipped engines, any Royal Purple engine oil is a good choice. If the engine has been modified for more performance, is a factory-built high performance engine, or a greater margin of protection is wanted, we recommend Royal Purple HMX, HPS or XPR engine oils. For a viscosity recommendation, contact the Royal Purple Automotive Technical Department.

While no special oil filter is required, we do recommend upgrading to a high-quality oil filter, which will do a better job at preventing particulates from circulating through the system and causing damage.
Royal Purple now offers Extended-Life oil filters. See our oil filter information page for more details or visit our dealer locator to find the dealer nearest you that carries our new filters.

Royal Purple suggests adhering to manufacturer’s recommended oil change intervals for vehicles under warranty using its API-licensed SAE engine oils. With many newer vehicles, the OEM recommended interval is typically between 4,000 and 7,500 miles. Check the owner’s manual of the vehicle for more detail.

For vehicles for which strict OEM warranty compliance is not a concern drain intervals may be extended to 12,000 miles (20,000 km) or 12 months, whichever occurs first with Royal Purple API-licensed synthetic engine oils and up to 15,000 miles (24,000 km) or 12 months, whichever comes first with Royal Purple HMX, HPS, and XPR engine oils. The extended drain intervals apply to primarily street-driven, mechanically sound vehicles. If switching to a Royal Purple synthetic engine oil from a conventional oil, please contact the Royal Purple Automotive Technical Department for guidelines specific to your vehicle. In many cases, it may be possible to extend the drain intervals much further. However, it is not recommended to do so without performing trend oil analysis to monitor oil condition, as there are too many variables besides the quality and durability of the engine oil that will affect the safe drain interval. Royal Purple can advise on oil analysis service performed through third-party labs. Contact Royal Purple Automotive Technical Department for more information.

Royal Purple suggests adhering to manufacturer’s recommended oil change intervals for vehicles under warranty. For vehicles outside the OEM warranty, please see the recommendations below.

Diesel pick-up trucks and passenger cars with an oil capacity of 10 or more quarts:
For vehicles for which OEM warranty is not a concern, drain intervals can be extended up to 15,000 miles (24,000 km) or 12 months, whichever occurs first using Royal Purple SAE 15W-40 or HPS engine oils.
Passenger cars, light trucks and vans:
For vehicles for which OEM warranty is not a concern, drain intervals can be extended up to 12,000 miles (20,000 km) or 12 months, whichever occurs first, using Royal Purple SAE 15W-40. An extended interval of up to 15,000 miles (24,000 km) or 12 months, whichever occurs first, is recommended when using Royal Purple HPS oils.

The extended drain intervals provided above apply primarily to street-driven, mechanically sound vehicles. For guidelines specific to your vehicle, we recommend contacting the Royal Purple Automotive Technical Department.

Yes. Mileage and/or age is not a factor when used in a mechanically sound engine. In high-mileage applications, we do recommend running a minimum of two short (3,000 mile/5,000Km) intervals before extending the oil drain intervals. This will enable Royal Purple’s high solvency to remove existing deposits gradually; such deposits can restrict oil flow, if excessive, as well as reduce the oil service life significantly.

Properly formulated synthetic oils will generally not cause seals and gaskets to leak. High performance synthetic oils possess a higher degree of natural solvency, which can clean and remove deposits left by previous oils. The removal of extensive oil deposits can expose marginal or already damaged oil seals, which may then leak. If engine oil leaks are a concern, the best course of action is to inspect the equipment for existing signs of leaks (oil spots, drips, and exterior wetting). If there are no existing sings of leakage, the likelihood of developing a leak is little to none.

Occasionally, apparent oil consumption after switching to a synthetic engine oil will increase. Often, this is not real consumption, rather what appears to be greater due to the longer oil drain intervals possible with premium synthetic engine oils. An actual increase in oil consumption in an engine that exhibits low oil consumption is rare. If an engine currently has excessive oil consumption (i.e. greater than 1 quart / 1,000 miles) the recommended course of action is to solve the oil consumption problem before switching to a synthetic. For concerns about specific applications, please contact the Royal Purple Automotive Technical Department.

No. We strongly recommend against using any oil additives as do most automotive manufacturers. Engine oils are formulated with a fine balance of additives (anti-foam, corrosion inhibitors, anti-wear, detergent / dispersants, oxidation inhibitors), and more is not necessarily better. The use of an oil additive could upset the balance resulting in reduced performance.

Yes. Royal Purple Motor Oils are composed of a proprietary formulation of synthetic base oils and synthetic additives containing iso-paraffinic diluents. Royal Purple Break-In Oil is our only non-synthetic Consumer engine oil and it is a full conventional oil.

No. Royal Purple Break-In Oil is the only non-synthetic consumer engine oil we offer. Break-In Oil is a high quality conventional engine oil.

Royal Purple Break-In Oil is a fully-formulated conventional engine oil with an elevated amount of anti-wear additive. Break-In Oil is not an additive. Royal Purple Break-In Oil should be used by itself as the engine lubricant.
